Barragan wants CL spot at Mestalla

Valencia defender Antonio Barragan feels a Champions League spot is within the club’s reach this season.

Los Che have made a flying start to the 2014-15 campaign with two wins and a draw, and Barragan remarked that on a personal level he is pleased to have entered into new boss Nuno Espirito Santo’s plans.

“I’m very content personally as I’ve started all three games and I’m also happy on a collective level,” the former Real Valladolid, Deportivo la Coruna and Liverpool right-back told a Press conference.

“Things are going well and our aim is to get into the Champions League, although we need to take things game-by-game, but we’ve had a good start and are looking forward to the next match against Getafe to maintain the positive momentum.”

Barragan believes Valencia have put together a strong squad this season, but still considers there is room for improvement.

“We try to do our best but there are always things to improve upon. During the week we try to work on things we are not doing well and then translate that into the game.

“The boss has spoken well of me and when that happens it gives you confidence for the matches. There will be people who like you and people who don’t, so I try to be the most complete player I can be for the team.”

Despite his contract being up for renewal in June next year, Barragan says he would rather it be put on the back burner so he can concentrate on football.

“I’m focusing on this year and not thinking about next season. I’m happy at Valencia but these are matters for my agent and the club to sort out.

“I think it’s better to concentrate on the sporting side of things. We’ll see what happens but if agreement can be reached I’ll carry on here,” he added.
