Nacho: Madrid need unity

Real Madrid defender Nacho believes the club needs the support of the fans if they’re to succeed this season.

He was speaking after Los Blancos began the defence of the Champions League with a 5-1 win over Basel, Nacho creating the first goal when his cross was turned into his own net by Marek Suchy.

“It was an important win, especially after the other day in the League,” AS reports Nacho saying.

He was referring to the home derby defeat against Atletico Madrid, a game that saw Iker Casillas jeered by sections of the Santiago Bernabeu.

Casillas was however given a generally warm reception on Tuesday night, although there was a smattering of less positive responses.

“The fans come to the stadium and they can do what they want,” he continued.

“They judge, we play. But we need unity between the pitch and the stands. I’m sure we’ll get it.”

Nacho added that the players were pleased with their performance despite tailing off a little in the second half.

“It wasn’t the best game but they’re all different. We had a good tempo all game and we’ve gotten what we wanted,” he countered.

“I’m very happy, although the goal helped. I want to take every opportunity I get. I have to work every day to earn my place and then the Coach decides.”
