‘Ideally Vermaelen goes abroad’

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has admitted that he would prefer to sell Thomas Vermaelen abroad.

The Belgium international is surplus to requirements at the Emirates, having fallen behind Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny in the pecking order.

And with Barcelona and Manchester United thought to be interested, the French tactician has conceded that he would ideally sell the defender away from the Premier League.

“Manchester United are part of the group of bidders. He could leave,” Wenger told reporters.

“We have offers from abroad and ideally I would rather sell him to a club abroad.

“We're in a position where it's difficult to stand in his way.”
