‘Messi has Barca’s support’

Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu has said Lionel Messi’s tax case is a personal matter but he has the club’s support.

Bartomeu has been interviewed by CNN, AS report, and as well as touching on legal issues involving Messi and Neymar, he also revealed more about the signing of Luis Suarez and reflected on former Coach Pep Guardiola.

“[The Neymar case] is being investigated by a court in Spain and we have different interpretations,” Bartomeu said.

“We were prudent and paid taxes in Brazil and Spain. We paid twice to avoid any misunderstanding with the law.

“When the truth comes out in the light Barca will benefit.”

Messi meanwhile has been caught up in allegations of tax evasion and Bartomeu insisted it wasn’t a club issue, but the club would support the forward however was required.

“It’s something that belongs in his personal life. He has our support and our help and is working with his advisors and lawyers,” Bartomeu continued.

“For anything he needs, the club is here to help.”

Bartomeu was also asked about Guardiola and suggested he could see the ex-boss returning one day.

“I learned a lot from Guardiola. He’s a genius,” he said.

“People who are Barca and who wear Barca in the heart return to help the club. I see many people who can help Barca in future.

“After 2022 many of the players who are here now, or with other teams, can return to Barca as coaches, sporting directors, Presidents…because after all we are a family.”
