RFEF uphold Racing Copa ban

Racing Santander will miss next season’s Copa del Rey after the RFEF decided not to lift the suspension imposed for refusing to play.

The Racing players declined to participate in the quarter-final second-leg against Real Sociedad in protest at going unpaid for several months, AS has reported.

They took to the field but didn’t engage when the referee blew for kick-off and the official was forced to abandon the match.

Racing were making a public stand against the then-board, who were sacked when it was announced the club was barred from the 2014-15 Copa del Rey.

The Federation has rejected the appeal of the new Racing board, citing the laws of the competition that say unauthorised withdrawal from the competition will result in a forced absence from the following year’s edition.
