‘Dutch deserved final place’

Arjen Robben believes his Netherlands team should be contesting the World Cup final, rather than reflecting on a third-place finish.

The Netherlands beat Brazil 3-0 last night to claim the bronze medal, but while Robben is happy to have taken something away from the tournament, he didn’t hide his sadness at not being in Sunday’s showpiece.

“It’s a good end for us but the disappointment is still dominant,” he said, according to AS.

“We gave everything and I’m very proud. It’s a pleasure working with this team and we deserved to be in the final.

“I’m empty. This game had nothing to do with the one against Argentina because Brazil leaves more space.

“But third place, at the end of the day, is a good result for the Netherlands.”
