James ‘wanted to make history’

James Rodriguez has spoken of his disappointment at Colombia’s World Cup quarter-final defeat to Brazil.

The hosts prevailed with a 2-1 win, James converting a penalty for his side after Thiago Silva and David Luiz had put Brazil in front.

AS reports an emotional James speaking to reporters after the final whistle, the Monaco forward criticising the performance of Spanish referee Carlos Velasco Carballo.

“I’m crying because I think we all are inside,” he said.

“Unfortunately the referee didn’t help us much. We wanted to make history, but that’s life.”

James was consoled by Luiz and Dani Alves after the match and said he was thankful for their comfort and not ashamed of his emotion.

“I appreciate the gesture of Luiz and Alves. It shows that men also cry.

“They told me I was a good player. So many stars hugged me. I’m proud.”
