Wilmots: Belgium deserved win

Belgium Coach Marc Wilmots admitted he was concerned for his side against the United States but feels they deserved the win.

The Red Devils progressed to the World Cup quarter-finals with a 2-1 victory over the USA, all the goals coming in extra time.

Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku gave Belgium a two-goal lead before Julian Green pulled one back, setting up a nervy finish.

Belgium though held out and Wilmots told the Press after the match that they earned the next round meeting with Argentina.

“We had at least 15 scoring opportunities, so we deserved to go through, even though it was scary to the very end,” he said.

“The players fought hard for this qualification and dug deep. All of Belgium can celebrate this quarter-final.

“Romelu was going through a difficult time and had received a lot of criticism after recent games, but I had prepared him well for this match.

“This is the life of a striker, I’m afraid, as you are judged on goals. It’s not the victory of one single player, but of the whole group.”
