Howard: Lukaku was decisive

Tim Howard has acknowledged the impact of Belgium substitute Romelu Lukaku after the United States’ World Cup exit.

The Round of 16 meeting between the sides was goalless after 90 minutes, with Lukaku introduced for the start of extra time.

Lukaku, who spent last season as a teammate of Howard’s at Everton, was involved in Belgium’s first goal and scored the second as Marc Wilmots’ side claimed a 2-1 win despite Howard’s best efforts.

“Lukaku caused us a lot of problems, he was a great change and I think decisive in the game,” AS reports Howard as saying post-match.

Despite the defeat, Howard insists the future is bright for Jurgen Klinsmann’s USA.

“If we can keep playing well then we will have opportunities in future. But you have to congratulate Belgium,” he added.

“Sometimes you give everything and don’t get the result, and it’s a shame. But I’m proud. We had hope when we scored in extra time.

“At 2-1 we put on pressure but didn’t get level. But this group of players is incredible.”
