Mondragon becomes oldest WC player

Colombia goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon became the oldest player to appear in the World Cup after coming on as a substitute yesterday.

The 43-year-old Mondragon replaced David Ospina for the final four minutes of the South Americans’ 4-1 win over Japan, surpassing Roger Milla’s record of 42, set at World Cup 1994 in the United States.

Mondragon hadn’t made a competitive appearance for Colombia since 2005 but the run-out was his 56th cap for his country, having turned 43 three days before the match.
