‘Spain have to beat Chile’

Cesc Fabregas has called on Spain to give their all against Chile or face leaving the World Cup early.

Wednesday’s meeting with the South Americans is a must-win for the holders after Friday’s defeat to the Netherlands.

Fabregas, who completed a move from Barcelona to Chelsea late last week, told a Press conference that the squad will do whatever it takes to stay in the tournament.

“This team has character and this is certainly one of the most difficult times but we will give everything to make it happen,” AS reports the midfielder as saying.

“Let’s go out and give everything and win, because it’s our only option. They will come out after us as well and will play, but we have to exploit their weaknesses.

“It’s life or death because otherwise we’ll be at home. This group can’t be taken for dead.”

Fabregas added that he is sure the only way Spain can win is to stay true to their style, rather than rip it up and start again against Chile.

“We know what’s at stake but there’s one way we play football. It’s characterised by possession but at this time we need to go out and attack and win against a brave opponent,” he continued.

“We have players to attack, score goals and control the game.”

Fabregas was asked about his new club but declined to say too much, only that he did want to return to Arsenal and when that was no longer an option, Chelsea was the best choice.

“I have nothing to say. My time was over at Barcelona and I just wanted to find the best option for me,” he confirmed.

“Arsenal was my first choice for a contract and I spoke with Arsene Wenger but Mesut Ozil has that position covered.

“After that I had some very good offers and looked in the Premier League, which is where I wanted to go. I talked to Jose Mourinho and heard what I wanted to hear.”
