Thiago Silva ‘won’t accept second’

Brazil captain Thiago Silva has said only winning the World Cup can be considered good enough for the hosts.

The Paris Saint-Germain defender has spoken to French newspaper Le Monde, with his comments also published by AS.

Silva also called on the people of Brazil to allow the tournament to pass off peacefully, but backed their right to register protest if they are unhappy.

“We will not accept second or third. We’ll only accept first place, world champions,” the former Milan defender said.

“That’s our only goal and we are going to work for that. I know it will be difficult but we have the opportunity to make history. I just feel ready to win the World Cup in Brazil.

“I hope it’s a quiet World Cup. I support a peaceful project, without violence.”
