Costa ‘wanted Atletico stay’

Diego Costa wanted to spend another year at Atletico Madrid but was forced to move to Chelsea because of a deal with agent Jorge Mendes.

Marca claim that Costa allowed Mendes to do a deal with the Blues – which he duly did – that included a penalty clause if the move didn’t happen. No figure is confirmed but it is said to be several million euros.

Costa however began to have doubts about moving to England and was encouraged to stay by talk of a new contract with the League champions.

But the penalty clause meant Costa had to choose between completing the transfer or paying a substantial sum, and he’s expected to become a Chelsea player in the near future.

Costa’s doubts are the reason Jose Mourinho is trying to sign Tiago Mendes and Filipe Luis from Atletico, in an effort to make the Spain international’s new surroundings as comfortable as possible.

Tiago and Filipe are said by Marca to be two of Costa’s closest friends at Vicente Calderon.
