Tebas backs Bilbao 2020

Spanish Football Association President Javier Tebas has publicly backed Bilbao’s attempts to host Euro 2020 matches.

For the first time in history, the international showpiece tournament is set to have no specific host nation, with matches due to be scattered around multiple countries.

Now, the LFP chief has gone on record as saying he will do all he can to help the bid of San Mames, which is the home of Athletic Bilbao.

He also said he wished Spanish football had more stadiums of the calibre of the Basque side’s home, which was opened last year.

“I want to show that Bilbao has the support of the League in its attempts to host European Championship matches in 2020,” Tebas told reporters.

“It’s very important for Bilbao and for Spanish football. Everything we can do to help, we will do it.

“San Mames wuld be among the best stadiums in the Bundesliga. I want to take my children to see the stadium!

“Hopefully we ca redevelop more stadiums in this way. If we could, we would put ourselves up there with the Bundesliga.”
