Diop: Atleti fans called me a monkey

Pape Diop revealed he danced in front of the Atletico Madrid fans after Levante’s 2-0 win because he was targeted with monkey chants.

A Filipe Luis own goal and a second-half effort from David Barral gave Les Granotes the victory but there was an incident after the final whistle following Diop’s display in front of the away section.

He explained after the final whistle his reasoning, alleging he was racially abused by the Atletico supporters.

“They called me a monkey and I turned and imitated a monkey,” Marca reports the midfielder as saying.

“I’m tired of racism in football. And there’s a lot.

“I made the monkey dance to play up the matter. I wanted people to know what happened.

“I don’t know if it’s racist or disrespectful but they have to stop screaming the monkey chants of some of them.”
