‘Espanyol are desperate’

Javier Aguirre has said Espanyol’s game against Almeria is as vital for his side as the relegation-threatened visitors to Cornella El-Prat.

Espanyol are 11th in La Liga and not quite mathematically save from the drop, although Almeria’s situation is far more perilous.

Francisco’s side are 19th, five points from safety with four games to go, but Aguirre wants his players to understand the fixture is equally important for both teams.

“We are desperate too. We’re playing for prestige, money, position in the table, personal challenges, to reach 50 points, and ultimately, to end the season very well or not,” Marca reports Aguirre as saying at his pre-match Press conference.

“There can be no more excuses. We have an obligation to play well, run and win.

“They want the three points as much as us. If we came on the back of four wins it would be different.”

Espanyol haven’t won since March 25, picking up only one point from a possible 12.

Aguirre also deflected questions regarding his future, saying only that he will speak with the President at the end of the season.
