Carlos: Madrid can’t push Ronaldo

Roberto Carlos has advised Real Madrid not to push Cristiano Ronaldo too hard until his knee complaint has cleared up.

The forward has sat out Madrid’s last two games, the 4-0 win over Real Sociedad and 2-0 defeat against Borussia Dortmund.

Carlo Ancelotti has said Ronaldo is being rested and he was on the bench for the Champions League tie, but didn’t take to the field.

Speaking to Radio Marca on his 41st birthday, Carlos revealed his experience of the same problem currently afflicting Ronaldo.

“I had the same injury and had to strengthen the knee with a lot of fitness work and massage to remove the swelling,” the former left-back said.

“It’s a nuisance that must be treated with care. If you force it too much you just get a more chronic injury.”

Carlos added that it is possible to play through the injury if need be, and believes the club can do a lot to ease the pain Ronaldo is enduring.

“I used to strengthen my leg 45 minutes before training, and removed the pain and played normally,” Carlos said.

“Before training is a recovery session and before the match Madrid has everything to take away the pain.”
