Diego pleased with ‘golazo’

Diego Ribas was delighted with his spectacular goal against Barcelona in Tuesday’s Champions League draw.

The Atletico Madrid midfielder was introduced as a substitute for the injured Diego Costa and scored the opening goal of the game with a long-range effort.

Neymar later levelled for Barca and Diego spoke after the match about his goal, his compatriot and the injured Costa.

“Diego is sad because this was an important game and he wanted to play,” Ribas told reporters.

“But what he did was phenomenal. It’s important now that he rests and recovers. We need him.

“Neymar is a special player, very strong. He had an opportunity for his goal and scored. He’ll be one of the best in the world.

“My goal was a golazo and a very important goal. I’m very happy.

“Goals give me confidence and they’re important in making me comfortable. It’ll be good for the future.

“I always dedicate my goals to God. The last few games haven’t been easy for me.

“My goal put the team in front, so I was happy. It’s good to play, to feel important, to score.

“The celebration was for the entire team.”

Diego was asked if Atletico’s away goal put his team in a good position to reach the semi-finals.

“Are we favourites? It’s all still open and very difficult,” he replied.

“Barca are a spectacular team. We need to play like today again.”
