Torres ‘admires’ Simeone

Fernando Torres has said he admires Atletico Madrid Coach Diego Simeone and added always wants to work with people he admires.

Torres has conducted a lengthy interview with AS to mark his 30th birthday and in it he has spoken of his time at Liverpool and his experiences playing under Jose Mourinho.

The subject of Atletico was also raised and Torres was asked if he will ever return to Los Colchoneros.

“In football you never know. You can’t be sure where you’re going to be tomorrow or in a week or in 10 years,” he replied.

“I have a lot of admiration for Cholo from when we were teammates. He helped me a lot and taught me to be captain,” Torres added regarding Simeone.

“He taught me many things in our seasons together at Atleti.

“I always want to work alongside people I admire. I admired from the outside Rafael Benitez and had the opportunity to work with him.

“It was the same with Jose Mourinho and Luis Aragones.

“I have been fortunate to work with people who you say from the outside: ‘What do they have? What is their secret? Why do all their teams win?’

“Simeone is like [Pep] Guardiola or other Coaches. You’d get to see how they train.

“The twists and turns of life are unknown. I don’t have to meet Simeone either here or with Atleti.

“Who was going to tell me I would work with Benitez at two English teams?”

Torres went on speak more about his impressions of Simeone and the success he has had as Atletico Coach.

“I’m proud of the work that has been done. It takes money to compete and Atletico was in an awkward situation.

“Since Cholo joined the team has taken a big leap in quality. I am extremely proud of what they’re doing.

“I wasn’t expecting it yet. The economic imbalance means it takes more work to compensate. It’s beautiful when Atletico win.”
