Marcelino unhappy with Paulista red

Villarreal Coach Marcelino was unhappy with the decision to send off Gabriel Paulista in the 1-1 draw with Athletic Bilbao.

The Yellow Submarine were leading at El Madrigal through a Tomas Pina goal but shortly after the hour mark went down to 10 men.

Aritz Aduriz later equalised for Athletic, having missed a first half penalty, to maintain a seven point gap between the sides.

Athletic remain in fourth place while Villarreal are still sixth, with Real Sociedad separating the sides.

Speaking at a post-match Press conference, Marcelino took a sarcastic tone when the issue of the red card was raised.

“I won’t talk about referees because when they are talked about, they’re ridiculed,” he began.

“The referee’s performance was lovely…I thought we had a democracy here where you could say what you wanted.

“We were in control of the match before the sending off. We were the better side.

“In the 180 minutes we’ve played against Athletic, we’ve had 10 men for 75 of them. Their goal was predictable.

“They are the favourites to get into the Champions League.”
