Aguirre renewal on hold

Espanyol will not discuss the renewal of Javier Aguirre’s contract yet, according to the club’s President.

Joan Collet told Spanish radio that he will only open talks with the Coach if sporting director Oscar Perarnau gives the go-ahead, and the same goes for the contracts of Sergio Garcia and Kiko Casilla.

“Personally I think [Aguirre] has done a good job but this topic is discussed later,” Collet said.

“The first to decide on the sports project for next season is the sports director.

“And if he tells me I need to renew, I would support him. Then we'll see whether or not [Aguirre] wants to stay here.”

According to Mundo Deportivo Garcia has said recently that he expects to be offered a lower contract by Espanyol than his current deal – a situation the forward would be content with but one Collet says won’t come to pass.

“Sergio will not be offered less because he has earned it,” Collet added.

“We want to continue with him but it won’t be an easy negotiation, as with any player.

“The sporting director has already spoken to his agent but I have yet to meet him.

“He has another year on his contract and we appreciate him a lot.”

Collet added that he understands the concern among Espanyol supporters that important players such as Casilla could be sold this summer, but he argued it is simply a reality of Espanyol’s situation.

“When I was a member it annoyed me every summer when we sold our idols,” Collet admitted.

“We have to understand that we sell and we are all on sale. If we sell, sell well.”
