Raul: I can’t say who I’d like to win

Real Madrid legend Raul has conceded that he is looking forward to two of his old teams meeting in the Champions League.

Schalke host Los Blancos in their Last 16 first leg on Wednesday, and the striker, who represented both in his illustrious career, just wishes he could play.

“The first thing that crossed my mind what wishing that I could be able to play this tie,” he told AS.

“I can’t say who I’d like to win although, it was at Real Madrid where I became an adult and where I spent practically my whole career and achieved a lot of success.

“It was an incredible time for me. I was at Schalke for less time but it was a moment which I lived through with great intensity.

“I never imagined that when I left the Gelsenkirchen, I would still have such strong ties to the club. I’ll be watching the game from a very comfortable point of view.

“Schalke need to overcome their shortcomings in both matches. All of their players will need to give 120 per cent and exhibit all of their potential – and of course, they’ll also need a bit of luck.

“As I always say, they need to gain a positive result at home because, if they don’t, it’s going to be very difficult for them at the Bernabéu.”

The Spain international then commented on who he thinks will be the key player over the two matches.

“Unsurprisingly, that player will be Cristiano Ronaldo. He is at the pinnacle of his career and competes hard in every match.

“You have to admire his performance levels and consistency. Xabi Alonso is also very important for Real Madrid – he’s the player who dictates play from the centre of the park. And then there are other important players like Casillas and Ramos.”
