Luis Enrique has said he is proud of his players’ performance against Athletic Bilbao but believes Celta Vigo deserved to win.

The game at Balaidos finished goalless and while Enrique was pleased with the point gained from a Champions League challenger, he feels it wouldn’t have been underserved for Celta to take all three.

“Had we won today I don’t think anyone would have been surprised,” Enrique told a post-match Press conference.

“But the game doesn’t reward merit, only effectiveness.

“Last week we deserved a draw and won and this week we deserved to win and drew.

“We’ve been better than Athletic, who are in fourth place and in great form.

“It would have been very nice if Mario Bermejo’s chance ended up in goal.”

Enrique added that he expects the performance and result against Athletic will drive his team, 11th in the table, to better things later in the season.

“Anything that puts distance between the teams behind us, even temporarily, is welcome.

“There are several things that will strengthen us because the hardest thing against teams at this level is to create chances, and we did that.”
