‘Mata can be Man Utd great’

Ryan Giggs believes Juan Mata has what it takes to become part of Manchester United folklore.

The Spain international moved to Old Trafford from Chelsea in the January transfer window, David Moyes paying a club record £37.1m (€44.8m) for the midfielder.

Giggs told MUTV that from what he has seen of Mata so far, he sees no reason why he can’t go down in history.

“I think he could be [a Man Utd great],” Giggs said.

“He's obviously got the talent. I don't want to put too much pressure on him but I don't see why not.”

Giggs, player-coach under Moyes, added that the players were as excited as anyone when Mata arrived.

“The players are just like the fans.

“When they see a quality player come through the door, it gives them that excitement and you feel it around training. It gives everybody a lift.

“We've played against him for the last three years and know the quality he has got.”

Giggs also believes that Spain will benefit from Mata’s move as much as the player or his new club.

“Coming here will help him with regards to playing for Spain if he is playing week in and week out (for United),” the Welshman said.
