Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin dreams of winning the League this season but admits to being physically worn out.

A 4-0 win over Real Sociedad on Sunday took Atleti top of the table after Barcelona’s defeat to Valencia on Sunday, a three-point gap opening up between Los Colchoneros and the current champions.

Coach Diego Simeone has said Atletico can’t win the League this season but Godin revealed he has thought about what it would be like to do so.

“It’d be a dream, an illusion, for all of Atletico,” Marca reports Godin as saying.

“I’ve never been top of the League. It’s not easy to play well when you’re top and not wanting to lose,” Godin added.

“I’m not enjoying the physical and mental pressure of having to win. It’s very wearing.

“But we are great physically and we’re playing at the highest level. We have a very promising future.”

Godin believes it is when playing Real Madrid and Barca that Atletico’s quality can come to the fore, although he notes that money is also a factor.

“In high level games that’s where we see how much you’ve learned, and what the budget of each team is.

“We are a great team. Anyone who comes to us has to perform at a high level.”

Atletico meet Madrid in the Copa del Rey semi-final first-leg on Wednesday evening and Godin insists that Atleti’s title aspirations have not diminished the value they place on the Cup, particularly considering the opposition.

“This is a special game. We’ve played games like this before and you have to give everything.”
