Villarreal target Real Madrid win

Villarreal Coach Marcelino has his sights set on beating Real Madrid after the Yellow Submarine dispatched Osasuna.

A Jeremy Perbet brace and Manu Trigueros’ first goal for the club delivered the points for Villarreal, with Oirol Riera getting a late consolation in the 3-1 home win.

The result sees Villarreal move to within three points of Athletic Bilbao, who hold the final Champions League qualification place.

Marcelino told a post-match Press conference that he is content with having 40 points from 22 games but is eager for more.

“It’s a nice figure at this point,” the Coach added.

“We’d have taken this in September but I think the play, teamwork, hard work and ability of this group means we could have had more.

“Frankly though we are pleased with what we are doing.”

Marcelino admitted that after losing to Real Valladolid a quick win was badly needed, and now wants his players to live out that old maxim of taking each game as it comes.

“First we’ll enjoy this win and from Tuesday see what the week brings. Hopefully we have no mishaps.

“But the goal is to beat Real Madrid, and then the next opponent.

“If we win many more games we’ll finish high up the table.

“Until now we have been very smart in playing every game like a Cup final and that should remain the case.

“We should respect every opponent to the fullest with the intention of continuing to improve.”

Marcelino was asked about the contributions of the two goal scorers, and praised the hard work of Trigueros and the potency of Perbet.

“All the evidence from the times he gets forward Trigueros’ says he’s been successful.

“We’re all very happy for him.

“We look at his average distance and that’s helped to build trust.

“Perbet has goals in him.

“He’s shown that since last season when he helped us a lot. He’s proving very effective and can hopefully keep going.”
