Madrid mayor Ana Botella sees Wednesday’s Copa del Rey clash between old rivals Real Madrid and Atletico as the ideal tribute to Luis Aragones.
Euro 2008 winning Coach Aragones, who also had a spell in charge at the Vicente Calderon, passed away at the weekend and Botella feels the game at the Bernabeu has come at the perfect time.
“There can be no better tribute,” Botella remarked at a reception ceremony for the two club Presidents earlier today.
“As mayor it is a pleasure to receive the presidents of two football clubs who are so important to our city and to Spain.
“We want to congratulate them both on reaching the semi-finals, which means a Madrid team will win in any case.
“I am certain that the fans will support their teams in an exemplary manner, but as mayor I want to call for sportsmanship, co-operation and respecting the opponent.
“Thank you to both Presidents for being here and good luck to both teams.”
