‘Courtois cheap at any price’

Diego Simeone believes that whatever price Atletico Madrid have to pay to sign Thibaut Courtois would be value for money.

Marca reports that El Cholo was speaking on Spanish television and discussed the future of the Belgium goalkeeper, on loan from Chelsea.

Asked if he would pay €26m for Courtois, Simeone replied in unequivocal fashion.

“Definitely. For me anything we pay for Courtois is cheap.

“He’s a young guy with a huge future and is on track to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

“Signing a goalkeeper of his calibre would be a big step.

“It won’t be easy. It depends on what Courtois wants.

“We know what the club needs to do but it’s not up to us, he’s not our player.”

Simeone added that there is no doubt David Villa will still be at Vicente Calderon next season, and that Diego Costa is not in crisis after a spell of goalless games.

The Argentine went on to reveal his pride at Atletico’s season so far but warned supporters against getting their hopes up to unrealistic levels.

“Our season has been extraordinary but dreaming is for fans. We live in reality.

“We train, we work, prepare and don’t create false expectations.

“Real Madrid and Barcelona are the favourites for the title. They have the history of success, the budget and the players.”
