Rakitic contract Sevilla’s priority

Sevilla have made signing Ivan Rakitic to a new contract a priority but might have to agree to a lower release clause to do so.

The captain’s current deal expires in the summer of 2015 and the Sevilla board are keen to tie down the Croatian to avoid losing him for a cut-price.

Rakitic could sign a new contract at the club but in order to clinch his signature, Sevilla could have to yield to a significantly lower release fee, Marca has reported.

Currently Rakitic’s release fee stands at €40m but the player’s agent and brother, Diego Rakitic, is likely to ask for the clause to be lowered to €25m.

Should that happen it will alert the midfielder’s many suitors, who include Sevilla’s Sunday opponents Atletico Madrid and a number of Premier League sides.
