Barca and Madrid chasing Carvalho

Real Madrid and Barcelona are ready to fight it out to sign Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho.

Mundo Deportivo cites a report from Sky Sports that claims the La Liga giants are both preparing approaches for the midfielder, along with a host of other sides across Europe.

Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United are named as suitors for the 21-year-old, but any potential buyer would likely have to meet Carvalho’s €45m release clause.

Sporting president Bruno Carvalho rejected any chance of the Angola-born Portugal international leaving the club.

Should Carvalho make the switch to Spain, Mundo adds he will be the latest in a long line of talent to cross Iberia. Cristiano Ronaldo, Radamel Falcao and Deco are the players pointed to by Mundo, who believe Spanish clubs will continue to look to Portugal for new signings.

Carvalho has spent time on loan at Fatima and Cercle Brugge, becoming a regular at Sporting under Coach Leandro Jardim this season.

He made his senior Portugal debut as a substitute in the World Cup play-off win over Sweden, appearing in the second-leg of the tie.
