‘Sociedad lacked intensity’

Real Sociedad Coach Jagoba Arrasate has blamed a lack of intensity for his side’s heavy defeat against Villarreal on Monday.

The Yellow Submarine ran out 5-1 winners to move into fifth place in the table, two points above La Real.

Speaking shortly after the game, Arrasate admitted he was struggling to find reasons for why his side were so lacklustre, but pointed to their sluggish tempo as one.

“It’s not easy to explain. We were second best all over.

“In football that can happen because they have quality. But I do worry that we lacked intensity and dedication.

“We are very annoyed because this cannot be the image of Real Sociedad. We have to get our act together.

“The difference between the two teams was that we did not put the intensity in that we have to.

“At no time did we give the impression we were ready for the game.”

Arrasate could only point to one positive from the match, the return of David Zurutuza, who had been missing with a lengthy injury.

That aside, Arrasate was scathing in his assessment of the squad and demanded better when they meet Villarreal again in the Copa del Rey on Thursday, with the score goalless from the first leg.

“We must learn from this game and change if we want to compete on Thursday.

“Many players need to think about how they played the game. Let’s hope there is difference because we left too much at home.

“It might be my worst day as Coach of La Real.”
