‘Ter Stegen right for Barca’

Marc-Andre ter Stegen is a good fit for Barcelona, his Monchengladbach teammate Alvaro Dominguez believes.

The Germany international is expected to join Barca as a replacement for Victor Valdes, with his club, Borussia Monchengladbach, confirming this week ter Stegen has turned down a new contract.

Sport has reported that the 21-year-old’s Spanish club colleague, Dominguez, has backed the goalkeeper to succeed in Spanish football.

“Barca signing ter Stegen is correct,” Dominguez said.

“He is a great goalkeeper, one of the best in Germany. And his age is a big factor. He is young with a great future ahead.”

“He will adapt well to Barca,” Dominguez continued.

“Despite his youth he is strong enough to go in the Barca goal. Ter Stegen can withstand pressure and has a great personality. He’s one of the leaders of our team despite his young age.

“He’s very quiet in his personal life, focused on football and training well. He’s a well-rounded person.

“We’ve shared jokes in Spanish – I’ve already taught him a little.”

Dominguez joined Gladbach from Atletico Madrid and is looking forward to seeing his former side take on Barca on Saturday.

“Atletico have to believe they can fight at the top of the League. Once you reach midseason tied with the one of the best teams in the world, you have to believe.”

Lionel Messi is expected to be involved after it was confirmed he will return against Getafe in the Copa del Rey and Dominguez believes the Argentine can prove the difference despite his injury lay-off.

“Messi’s had a long break. You can’t predict anything. He could turn up against Atletico and score a hat-trick.”

Dominguez is not the only Spaniard plying his trade in the Bundesliga and was fulsome in his praise for countryman Pep Guardiola and his achievements so far at Bayern Munich.

“Bayern are very strong, the best team in Europe. For me they are the most complete team in the world. Even the substitutes are all really good.”
