‘Madrid made immoral approach’

Robert Lewandowski’s agent has claimed Real Madrid attempted to sign the Poland international before he agreed a summer move to Bayern Munich.

The striker’s Borussia Dortmund contract expires at the end of the season and terms have been agreed on a free transfer switch to Bayern, with Lewandowski signing a five-year deal at the Bavarian club.

But Maik Barthel is quoted by Spiegel Online as revealing an approach from the Santiago Bernabeu.

“There was an immoral offer from Real Madrid,” Barthel said.

“We listened to their offer out of respect for such a big club, but breaking our word never crossed our mind.”

Barthel added that Madrid offered Lewandowski a €9.5m per year salary and a €10m signing on fee.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger confirmed he made an approach to sign Lewandowski 18 months ago but that the player had already made up his mind to join Bayern.
