Real Madrid President Florentino Perez has hailed the influence Eusebio has had on the game of football following his death at the weekend.
The former European Golden Boot winner passed away on Saturday night and Perez took to Madrid’s official website to offer his condolences and tell of the gratitude football owes the Portuguese giant.
“Football is what it is today, the most powerful and exciting of sports, thanks to greats like Eusebio who were capable of amazing feats,” it read.
“On the field he was able to make himself seem unstoppable, but Eusebio was much more than a great player. He was a role model and an excellent human being who was known for his humility.
“I remember a chat with him and his friend Alfredo Di Stefano when Eusebio had no qualms in saying that the former Real Madrid player was the best of all time. They admired each other, they respected each other and they were fond of each other, perhaps because they lived and breathed football and shared a love of the game.
“Today, not only Portugal is mourning the departure of one of the greatest footballers in history. Real Madrid and the world of football are mourning because of this unforgettable legend’s departure.”
