Arteta: Alonso’s doubts not economic

Mikel Arteta says that he believes Xabi Alonso’s doubts over renewing with Real Madrid are not due to economic factors.

The midfielder sees speculation continue over his future in the Spanish capital having so far held off negotiating an extension on his current contract, which expires at the end of the season.

Amid reports in recent weeks of financial aspects believed to be playing their part between Madrid and Alonso, Arsenal midfielder Arteta believes the theory that the 32-year-old is concerned on other aspects is more likely.

“I have know him since childhood. If he is in doubt over his renewal then it certainly not just for sporting doubts, but also for how his health is,” considered 31-year-old Arteta to Cadena Cope this week.

“He is very noble. I am certain that he will make clear the grounds for the decision he will take. On this, he will sign where he wants to.”

The former Real Sociedad man, who grew up playing football in San Sebastian alongside Alonso, was asked about his prospects of breaking into the Spain squad for this summer’s World Cup.

“Ninety per cent of my career has been here [in Britain]. There has been talk of me playing with England and the support for me here has been very good, but my dream has always been to play with the Spanish national team.

“For me it was very strong at an emotional level. I have had back luck because this has been a generation of players at a very high level.

“With Del Bosque I have not had an opportunity to speak. In 2009 is when I believe I was closer to the national team.”
