Gundogan-Madrid link denied

Borussia Dortmund have played down reports that Real Madrid are interested in picking up Ilkay Gundogan in the summer.

Los Blancos have been paired with returning interest in the midfielder, a reputed target last summer, amid continued speculation that Xabi Alonso may be on his way out of the Santiago Bernabeu in June 2014, at the end of his contract.

Whilst Gundogan’s father and agent this week was quoted as encouraging such talk, the club have now stated otherwise on the 23-year-old.

“If we were to believe everything that comes out of the Spanish Press, we would have to be concerned that we still have a team to put together,” Dortmund’s CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has told Bild this week.

“We have not been told by Ilkay or his father that he wants to leave us.”
