‘I’m showing I wanted to stay’

Jese Rodriguez has mused on his goalscoring impact from the bench against Valencia and on the competition for places at Real Madrid.

The youngster came off the bench for Los Blancos on Sunday evening to score a late winner at Mestalla for the visitors’ 3-2 victory.

“This win is very important and to score was amazing. It is a dream to score the deciding goal,” Jese reflected post-match.

“We showed everything we like in the team and that we're a strong unit. The first half was not as strong but then the team reacted and went in search of the goal.

“I have scored in big matches in the Camp Nou and the Mestalla but I'm just happy with the win, which is very important for the team. We're doing well although we've dropped some points.”

Those dropped points leave Madrid heading into the new year five points off the pace.

“Atletico and Barcelona are very well placed. We cannot give up because we are Real Madrid and we have to give everything whenever we play.

“There is a long way to go in the league and we can do well.”

Jese also mused on his situation at the club, competing for a place in Madrid’s attacking set-up.

“There is a lot of competition in the squad because we have world-class players; you have to respect everyone else and slowly work your way into the team.

“It is clear that I wanted to stay here and I am showing that. The Coach is giving me some pitch-time and being great with me and I am thankful.

“When I scored I looked for [Zinedine] Zidane, because he supports me every day. Now I have to keep working hard and helping the team.”
