‘Red card complicated matters’

Luis Enrique mused that Celta Vigo didn’t deserve to go 2-0 down to Athletic Bilbao, whilst life was then complicated by Hugo Mallo’s red card.

The Galicians were hit with an eventual 4-0 defeat at San Mames to bow out of the Copa del Rey at the Round of 32 stage with an aggregate 4-1 defeat.

For the visiting Coach, however, Markel Susaeta’s goal just before the break to make it 2-0, and Hugo Mallo’s second yellow card just after half-time, were decisive moves.

“If you have 11 players then it is hard against Athletic and with the red card it has complicated the tie much further. We had planned to come to harm Athletic with the idea of causing danger and taking our opportunities, but within a passage of two minutes Athletic have taken the ball and made us pay, but I think that the second goal was a bit excessive.

“We knew in the second half that a goal would complicate Athletic’s life, until Hugo Mallo’s red card. It doesn’t matter what I think [about the decision].”
