‘Retaining World Cup not easy’

Angel Maria Villar has reflected that Spain’s task in retaining the World Cup in Brazil next summer ‘will not be easy’.

La Roja are looking to follow up successfully retaining the European Championships in 2012 with a second consecutive world title, when they travel out to Brazil in June 2014.

However, according to the Spanish Football Federation’s President, the task is not so straight forward, in spite of expectation.

“The challenges for the coming year are clear – everyone at the World Cup, besides Spain, will want to win it,” Villar has told reporters this week.

“Spanish fans expect us to have an extraordinary result. Winning a World Cup in Brazil will not be easy, it is something a nation from Europe has never managed before, to win a World Cup in America.

“To qualify for the World Cup is already a success, but more is required from Spain. We are going there to compete, and we shall see what happens.

“But, nobody thinks that it will be easy. Conversely, 32 teams will go and only one will win.”
