‘Atleti aspire in every competition’

Enrique Cerezo has mused that Atletico Madrid currently ‘are aspiring to everything in the League, the Champions League and the Copa del Rey’.

Diego Simeone’s side have started the season strongly and have only been defeated the once in all competitions so far.

According to the capital side’s President, there is also an open ambition to go along with that form.

“Right now we are aspiring to everything in the League, the Champions League and the Copa del Rey,” Cerezo has mused to A Bola this week.

“At the end of the season we shall see if we have won them all, some of them or none of them, but for now our philosophy is to take each game as they come.

“It will not be easy. Last year we were third, but calmly we may have finished second.

“The Champions League? It is very difficult to win, because in it are big clubs and any moment in a game can prove decisive.

“I believe that to participate in it every season is important. You can go further or not in the competition, but the key is to be there.”

Cerezo was talking ahead of Atleti’s closing group stage encounter in this year’s competition, with qualification to the Last 16 already assured and opponents Porto playing for second with group rivals Zenit St Petersburg.

The President was asked if Los Colchoneros will be resting players ahead of a weekend League meeting with Valencia.

“I am not the Coach and he has very clear ideas about what the team has to do.

“It is correct that ahead of us is an important and difficult challenge against Valencia, which we have to win to keep fighting for the League.

“Against Porto we have peace of mind that we do not play for much, but the team will still want to win.”
