‘PSG tried for Ronaldo, but…’

Leonardo has claimed that Paris Saint-Germain tried to sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid this summer, but were turned down by the player and club.

The Portuguese star was linked with the French capital outfit, as well as former club Manchester United, amid rumoured issues in contract renegotiations with Los Blancos.

However, on from the 28-year-old renewing with Madrid at the start of this season, PSG’s former sporting director has unveiled their unsuccessful attempts to pick him up.

“We thought about signing Cristiano Ronaldo,” Leonardo, who stepped down from his role with the Parisians at the start of September, revealed to Telefoot this week.

“We did everything we could to convince him to leave Madrid and to play for PSG, but he refused and it was impossible because of Real Madrid.

“He said that PSG had a great team, but that he preferred to stay at Madrid.”

Leonardo also commented on speculation that PSG have previously looked at Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba, who is also seen on Madrid’s future shopping list.

“Of course he could play at PSG, but Juventus were faster. He represents a huge investment and in Paris there are great players who play in his position, but he will become one of the best players in the world.”
