‘We’ll take Cup step by step’

Marcelino Garcia Toral says that Villarreal may not be prioritising the Copa del Rey, but that they want to progress and will take it ‘step by step’.

The Yellow Submarine enter the competition this weekend at the Round of 32 phase and host Elche in the first leg on Friday, before a return match 11 days later.

“I see the tie as difficult. Elche are by no means an easy opponent, as they have demonstrated throughout the season in the League,” Marcelino has considered to reporters today.

“We have not had much luck in the draw, but we face the game with the idea of progressing and, we are playing the first game at home.

“The Cup is a competition in which we want to go step by step, and the intention is to approach this game with maximum care and maximum attitude to get through this first round.

“The fixtures are already determined, it is not something that influences me, I do not give up matches, for good or for bad.

“I think for Villarreal to be in Europe, then priorities should prevail and the Cup is the third competition.

“But for us there is no other competition of this type and therefore it is an important competition. We will go game by game, we want to pass this round and then we shall see.

“We will make changes, not many, but there will be some changes. Juan Carlos and Pantic, certainly, they are players who have not played many minutes so far, but they look good and have worked at the highest level for their chance, which comes now.”
