‘23 points without doing much’

Carlos Martinez sees shades of last year in Real Sociedad’s improved form, which he says is encouraged by a healthy points tally.

The San Sebastian outfit turned around a deficit at Espanyol on Saturday evening to emerge 2-1 winners and continue an improvement to the team’s League form, on from a difficult start to the season.

“We are very happy because we picked up three important points,” full-back Martinez has this week mused to Mundo Deportivo.

“The team had not played a good first half, but was able to react. We dominated from start to finish.

“Even when we were losing we knew we’d get into the game and when we began the second half we knew we could win.

“We were not satisfied with the equaliser from Antoine, we continued attacking.”

It was put to Martinez that La Real are in a similar position to last season, when a long run of form resulted in Champions League qualification.

“The dynamics of the second half of last season were spectacular. This year we are looking like the same team as last year.

“Clearly we have not been the same, but without making much noise we have managed 23 points.

“We shall see if we can maintain this level in the two remaining games before the end of the year.”
