Colotto: Christmas run-in vital

Espanyol defender Diego Colotto believes the club’s remaining La Liga fixtures from now until Christmas assume great significance.

Javier Aguirre’s men won 4-1 away at Rayo Vallecano in their first game back after the international break to end a run of one win from eight, but Colotto feels it is the run-up to the winter break could define the rest of the season.

“After these games we will be almost halfway through the campaign, so we’ll need to be positive and get a good amount of points to take into the second half of the season,” the Argentine told a Press conference.

“La Liga this year is very strange because it’s so tight. You can go from one or two points above the relegation zone to being in the European places.

“We’ve got to get points so that in April or May our objectives will be clear, but right now we want to be as high in the table as possible.”

Espanyol take on Real Sociedad at Cornella El-Prat this weekend and, despite the Basques having said goodbye to their Champions League hopes this week, Colotto is expecting a tough encounter.

“It doesn’t matter. La Real got their prize by playing in the Champions League after a magnificent year and they are the same players with the same quality.

“Results did not go for them but we are still expecting to face a great team,” he explained.
