Arrasate: La Real lost control

Jagoba Arrasate reflected that Real Sociedad lost control of their match with Shakhtar Donetsk after the first goal, and lost heart after the third.

The San Sebastian outfit saw any hope of progressing in European competition this season ended with a comprehensive 4-0 defeat in Ukraine in the fifth matchday of the Champions League group stages.

“In this competition you pay for the mistakes you make,” Arrasate mused afterwards.

“They went ahead and after the second goal it was game over. We wanted to dominate in midfield and play to our dynamic forwards.

“Everyone is very upset because our campaign is over. We had certain hopes for this game but we didn't start well.

“We now have one match left and we have to give 100 per cent to try and win against Leverkusen.

“In any game such thing as luck is important. This is exactly what we were missing today. Yes, we lost control of the game.

“And it happened, apparently, after the first goal before which we had operated well. After that, we started having problems with ball control.

“Certainly, initially we had hoped and we did everything to play well. However, when it got to 3-0 on the scoreboard, it was clear that we just lost heart, we could hardly do anything.

“But I repeat, we expect to do everything possible in the meeting with Bayer.”
