Rakitic unhurried over Sevilla renewal

Midfielder Ivan Rakitic is keeping his cards close to his chest regarding signing an extension to his Sevilla contract.

The Croatian international, signed from Schalke in January 2011 for a reported €2.5m, has 18 months left on his existing agreement at the Sanchez Pizjuan. However, despite being offered a new deal he told a Press conference he is in no rush to put pen to paper.

“Two weeks ago the club offered me an extension. I feel the confidence of the President and the director of football, while I’m comfortable with everyone at the club.

“Nonetheless, I prefer to wait and at the moment just want to concentrate on my football, on the derby game against Real Betis this week.

“I will make the decision when the time is right. But as I said, I’m very happy in Sevilla, where my wife Raquel is from.

“Right now I’m playing the best football of my career but I’ve come back a little tired [from the World Cup play-off games with Iceland]. However, that will change once the referee blows his whistle. I’m just thinking of Sunday and winning.”

The 25-year-old also recalled last season’s 5-1 victory over cross-city rivals Betis.

“I couldn’t sleep listening to the fans outside the team hotel last year. Needless to say, it gives you great motivation and you see something special.

“For Sevilla fans this derby is unique. It’s not pressure but it certainly makes you want to do it for them.

“It will also be my daughter’s first one and we have to win it. If I can contribute to the team then perfect, but what matters is that we win and in 10 or 15 years I can say to her that this one was for you.”
