Montoya puts talks on hold

Martin Montoya’s talks with Barcelona over a new contract are on hold as the player wants to clarify his sporting situation.

The 22-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and so can talk to interested parties from January.

Whilst it is a similar situation with Marc Bartra, reports have been that talks with the centre-back have been far more progressive than with his defensive teammate Montoya.

Sport are running the line today that the delay in talks with Montoya are focused on the player’s sentiment to make clear his position in the first team.

Having so far struggled for regular playing time, the right-back is understood to have informed Barcelona, through his agents, that he wants to focus on increasing the minutes he gets, ahead of ‘rushing into’ contract talks.

Montoya’s primary objective is still believed to be a renewal with the Catalans, with it believed that last summer he turned down advances from both Valencia and Inter.

However, it is also suggested that the Nerazzurri remain interested and could present an option once more come next summer.
