Enrique Cerezo has encouraged Atletico Madrid to defend the Copa del Rey ‘tooth and nail’, as he considers the prospect of a semi-final with Real Madrid.
The draw all the way to the final four of the Cup was held today and holders Atleti begin in the Round of 32 against Segunda B outfit Sant Andreu.
The draw has put last year’s defeated finalists Real Madrid in the same half as Los Colchoneros, presenting the possibility of a Madrid derby in the semi-finals.
“We must talk about the other opponents because there is still a long way to go to get to the semi-finals,” Cerezo has reflected today when asked of such a prospect.
“There really is a long way to go until the semi-finals. The important thing is to get there, to make [playing Madrid] a possibility.
“The draw is good because you never know what is going to be easy or difficult, each game must be played.
“We are champions and this year we have to defend the Cup tooth and nail .
“This a tournament for us, that we like and if we get to the final then it is the most beautiful day of the year.
“Our Round of 32 opponents Sant Andreu? I have not followed them lately. I imagine they will be a typical Catalan club, we will have to beat them even if it won’t be easy.”
