Valdes: Barca defended differently

Victor Valdes conceded that Barcelona opted to defend differently in playing out for a 3-0 win at Celta Vigo.

Tuesday evening’s Week 11 fixture saw the Blaugrana come away with the three points thanks to goals from Alexis Sanchez and Cesc Fabregas either side of a Yoel own goal.

For Barca’s ‘keeper, the performance was also key for how the result came about.

“We have taken the chances that we had,” Valdes considered to reporters after the clean sheet in Balaidos.

“Personally I am happy and also with how the defence has played another facet that is not normal for us, through defending much closer to our own penalty area than normal.

“Celta made it difficult for us to push up and so we have played in another way and defended in our area. It has been a very positive game for us. I think it will serve us well for the future.

“Emotionally we have reinforced the match against Madrid. We have shown that we want this League title and that’s dependent on winning matches like today and against Espanyol.”

Speculation continues to surround the club’s activities in looking for Valdes’ replacement for next season.

“I have spent 12 years in the first team and every year they have been bringing in a goalkeeper. It is normal, totally normal.

“Only the players who come here will be received with open arms from the people to help them adapt, at a very big club.”
