Ander Herrera has taken the unusual step of apologising to the match official for diving during Athletic Bilbao’s win at Getafe.
The young midfielder fell in the penalty box during the closing stages of his team’s 1-0 win on Monday night at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez and admitted post-match that there was no contact with a defender.
“Sometimes we complain about the referees, but today I must apologise because I tried to con him,” remarked Herrera after the Week 10 encounter.
“I am happy that he did not award a penalty, as I would have left a liar and I do not want to be one. I was wrong.
“I thought we could secure the game then, but above everything else there must be sportsmanship.”
